SEA LIFE

Among a lot of fish in the whole world you can find paper fish, too. Robert Lang and John Montroll invented over a dozen or so of them. I've met their figures frequently and they always amazed me with their precision and the similarity to our reality. However, I only used to astonish them. I was convinced that they are too difficult to be made, particularly, I have been making mainly modulars so far. Some time ago the beautiful fish called - Blackdevil Angler appeared in the Arthur Biernacki's gallery. It was made from the red metallic crepe. I appreciated it a lot and made up my mind then to fold it some day.

I found the diagram of Blackdevil Angler in the book 'Sea Life' by Robert Lang and John Montroll (read a review). I opened the book courageously on page 122 and I was terriffied indeed. Unfortunately it was the most difficult fish and I put it aside into the box for almost 4 months. The second approach was successful (of course it didn't look like Arthur's fish, but I am very glad with it). It occured to be so fascinated that I decided to fold the rest of them. There are about 38 different sea animalcules described in the book. The 14 ones among them are fish. These are about 70 pages of diagrams (sometimes you can see many folds shown in one drawing). Luckily, pictures are very legible. The additional advantage is using of 2-coloured page by the author. It makes reading diagrams much more easy. What's more, the proper performance of every fish is simpler, too.

Fish are arranged from the easiest to the most difficult ones according to the four step scale::

  • Sea Horse ** (JM)
  • Carp ** (JM)
  • Brill ** (RL)
  • Ocean Sunfish ** (JM)
  • Triggerfish ** (JM)
  • Angelfish *** (JM)
  • Goldfish *** (JM)
  • Cichlid *** (JM)
  • Sailfish *** (JM)
  • Barracuda *** (JM)
  • Blue Shark *** (JM)
  • Angler Fish *** (JM)
  • Blackdevil Angler **** (RL)
  • Lionfish **** (RL)

Every diagram starts with the description of the fish. How much it weights, how big it is, what it eats and what places it lives in. Next, there are several dozen of drawings, lots of our work and if we are lucky, fish may look like a real one. Besides, appreciate them by your own.
